There are millions of orphaned or handicapped street animals and abandoned pets in India.
The pioneering work of the Blue Cross Of India's ABC-AR program which became law over twenty odd years ago has done a great deal to mitigate the situation at a policy level. However its implementation which falls in the domain of the city corporations and municipalities still leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to its effectiveness. So the flood of orphaned pups and handicapped street animals in need of homes continues unabated, not to mention scores of so called 'pedigrees' being cruelly abandoned when they fall sick, grow old, lose favour of their 'masters' or simply go 'out-of-fashion'.
Orphaned Pups & Kittens:
Scores are motherless street pups and kittens are rescued by the Blue Cross Of India in Chennai every month.
Abandoned Pets:
Though abandoning a pet is illegal, many adult pet dogs and cats are anonymously abandoned. Many, often tied to posts overnight outside our Guindy shelter. These are rescued and managed in our Abandoned Animals section.
Handicapped Street Animals:
Often animals that suffer road accident and are handicapped cannot fend for themselves on the streets. They are rescued by the Blue Cross Of India and managed in our Geriatric and Special Needs section.
These are the animals that are in desperate need of loving homes.

Cleo was abandoned in a empty cardboard carton outside BCI
“Just for the innocent look in her eyes” trailed off Rabbeqa, “I would have given up everything I ever possessed, but all I had to do was a little bit of paperwork”.
Flashback to 29th December 2021 – a warm and beautiful morning for us in Chennai – not for Cleo who sat in the empty Pedigree cardboard box not far from the BCI gate – a large pile of fall leaves rustling against discarded water bottles her only company the previous night. A night that seemed like it would never end.
